Oil & gas site signs
Oil and gas sites in the UAE carry signs beyond a building site’s: pipeline route markers, H2S warning signs, muster points, labels on pipes and vessels, and tag plates on valves and equipment. In Abu Dhabi, ADOSH-SF CoP 17.0 requires signs or labels on vessels, tanks and visible pipes that hold dangerous substances, in Arabic and English and built to last. The detailed content, colours and materials are set by each operator’s project specification — pipeline markers on onshore projects, for example, are specified on high intensity prismatic sheeting, black on yellow with a red danger triangle.
Each of these is specified per project. The descriptions are the common build, not a substitute for the drawing.
Post-mounted panel along a buried line, black on yellow with a red danger triangle, Arabic and English, sized by the number of lines in the trench.
Yellow warning sign at the entrances to H2S areas, with the hazard and the protective action in Arabic and English.
Green safe-condition sign marking where people gather in an emergency, with directional arrows to it.
Content and hazard labels on visible pipes and vessels, with flow-direction arrows, at the points where exposure is likely.
Engraved or marked metal plate carrying the tag number from the P&ID, fixed to the valve or the equipment.
Yellow warning sign at the boundary of a classified hazardous area, to the format in the project specification.
Route markers on an Abu Dhabi onshore pipeline project, specified by the number of lines in the trench — the only marker sizes published for a UAE project. Other signs are sized for their viewing distance.
| Item | Size | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Route marker, one line | 500 × 550 mm | Onshore pipeline project drawing |
| Route marker, two lines in a common trench | 500 × 630 mm | Onshore pipeline project drawing |
| Route marker, three lines in a common trench | 500 × 710 mm | Onshore pipeline project drawing |
| Text at 9 m viewing distance | ≥ 30.5 mm (≈ 64 mm in poor conditions) | Dubai Municipality DM-HSD-GU99-SSW2, Annex D |

| H2S, muster, tag plates | To the project specification | Operator drawings |
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Route markers | Digital print on high intensity prismatic sheeting (ASTM D4956 Type III/IV), with overlaminate |
| Colours, route markers | Black text on yellow, red danger triangle |
| Engineer grade sheeting | ASTM D4956 Type I — does not meet a high intensity prismatic specification |
| Language | Arabic and English — CoP 17.0 §3.4(f) |
| Bilingual layout | English left-aligned, Arabic right-aligned — DM-HSD-GU99-SSW2 |

ADOSH-SF CoP 17.0 §3.8
Vessels, tanks and visible pipes containing dangerous substances or under pressure shall carry signs or labels, also following the Abu Dhabi Building Codes.
DM-HSD-GU99-SSW2 §I
Labels at sampling and filling points, drain valves and flanges likely to be broken, with intermediate labels along long runs.
Operator project specification
Content, colour coding, materials and sizes for plant and pipeline signs are set by the operator’s drawings, and sign wording may need the operator’s clearance before production.
Material approval
Projects ask for the sheeting manufacturer’s datasheet, test report and warranty with the material approval request — the sheeting grade is checked against the drawing.
Send the drawing and the specification clause, not a description.
Yes. ADOSH-SF CoP 17.0 §3.4(f) requires signs in a language suited to the workforce, including Arabic and English.
Onshore pipeline projects in Abu Dhabi specify high intensity prismatic sheeting, which meets ASTM D4956 Type III/IV. Engineer grade sheeting is Type I and does not meet that specification.
On an Abu Dhabi onshore project: 500 × 550 mm for one line, 500 × 630 mm for two in a common trench and 500 × 710 mm for three. Other projects set their own sizes on the drawing.
Yes — CoP 17.0 §3.8 in Abu Dhabi and DM-HSD-GU99-SSW2 in Dubai, with labels at the points where exposure is likely: sampling points, drains and flanges.
The project specification governs, and on operator projects the sign wording may need the operator’s clearance before production. The quotation follows the approved drawing.
