Photo frames & framing

Custom photo frames — the four decisions behind every one

A frame looks like one choice and is four: how big the image can go before it falls apart, what sits in front of it, whether it is mounted or fills the frame, and where it will hang. Get those right and the moulding is the easy part. This page covers each, and then points you at the configurator where you can price your own.

The four decisions

In this order. The first one is the one that cannot be fixed afterwards.

DecisionWhat it comes down toWhat we would say
How large can it go?The resolution of the file against the finished size. A photo from a phone is enormous on screen and modest on a wall; an old scan or a social-media download is smaller than it looksSend the file before you choose the size. We check it against the finished size and tell you the largest it holds up at — before printing, not after
Glass or acrylic?Glass is harder, flatter and heavier, and it breaks. Acrylic is light, effectively unbreakable, and scratches more easilyGlass for most interiors. Acrylic for anything large, anything high, anywhere with children, and anything that has to travel
Mounted, or full-bleed?A mount (the card border inside the frame) separates the image from the glazing and gives the eye somewhere to rest; full-bleed fills the frame edge to edgeA mount suits photographs, certificates and anything with detail at the edges. Full-bleed suits a graphic or a panoramic image that is already composed to its own edge
Where does it hang?Direct sun, a spotlight, humidity, or an ordinary wallA sunlit or spotlit wall ages a print faster than anything else in this list — see light fastness for what actually fades, and tell us before we choose the media

Only the first of these is irreversible. A mount can be re-cut and glazing can be swapped; a file that was never large enough cannot be made larger after it is printed.

What we frame, and what we print

Framing and printing are the same job here, which is the point: the image and the frame are specified against each other rather than bought separately and hoped about.

Frame profiles

More than 45 mouldings — solid wood, aluminium, acrylic and composite — in a range of widths, depths and finishes. Every one is cut to your measurement rather than to a standard pack size, so an odd size costs no more trouble than a common one.

Photo and fine-art printing

Printed on our own floor on photo paper, art paper, textured media or canvas. Printing and framing together is what lets us match the media to the frame and the wall, instead of framing whatever arrives.

Canvas, stretched or framed

A canvas print can be stretched over a wooden frame and hung as it is, or set into a moulding. Both are standard here — the stretched version is on the site as its own product, with sizes and prices.

Certificates, awards and documents

Framed certificates, graduation materials and official documents, singly or in quantity, and with the printing, foiling or embossing done in the same place. For institutional work this is usually a batch with one specification rather than a series of one-offs.

Non-standard and oversize

Panoramas, tall narrow formats, multi-panel sets and anything above a standard size. These are ordinary work rather than special requests — the limit is handling and glazing weight, which is where acrylic earns its place.

Protective glazing

Where a wall is bright, a UV-filtering glazing slows fading. It is a delay rather than a stop, and it is worth specifying where a picture is both valuable and sunlit.

Sizes, and what they need

There is no standard size for framing here — everything is cut to measure — but there are sizes people ask for most, and they are listed with their canvas and poster equivalents in the artwork size guide. The guide is the right place to start if you are choosing between sizes; this page is the right place if you are choosing what goes around the image. For a wall rather than a picture, the size question is a different one altogether, and the wallpaper pages cover it.

What to send us

With these you get a price rather than a conversation about one.

  • The image file itself, at the largest you have — not a messaging-app copy of it.
  • The finished size you want, or the wall measurement if you are unsure.
  • Whether you want it mounted, and in what colour.
  • Glass or acrylic, if you already know; we will advise if not.
  • Where it hangs: ordinary wall, sunlit, spotlit, or a humid room.
  • Quantity — one, or a set with a single specification.
  • The date you need it by.

What we will tell you plainly

We will not call a print museum-grade, and we will not tell you a photograph can go to any size. A file has a size beyond which it stops being a photograph and starts being an enlargement, and we would rather tell you that before printing than hand you something soft and expensive. We will also say when a standard frame from a shop would do the job — framing to measure is worth paying for when the size, the mount or the glazing matters, and not when it does not. Send the file and the wall, and you will get the largest honest size, the glazing we would use, and a price.

Questions we are asked

How big can I print my photo?

It depends on the file, not on the frame. Send it and we check it against the finished size before anything is printed — a phone photograph goes surprisingly large, a social-media download or an old scan usually does not. We will tell you the largest size it holds up at rather than printing what you asked for and letting you find out on the wall.

Glass or acrylic?

Glass for most interiors: it is flatter, harder and reads better. Acrylic for anything large, anything hung high, anywhere with children, and anything that has to be shipped — it is a fraction of the weight and it does not break. The trade-off is that acrylic scratches more easily, so it is cleaned with a soft cloth and nothing abrasive.

Should I have a mount?

For a photograph or a certificate, usually yes. A mount separates the image from the glazing, which matters physically as well as visually, and it gives the eye a border. Full-bleed suits an image already composed to its own edge — a graphic, a panorama, a canvas. It is also reversible: a mount can be re-cut later, so it is not the decision to agonise over.

Do you print as well as frame?

Yes, on our own floor — photo paper, art paper, textured media and canvas. That is the reason to do both in one place: the media is chosen against the frame and the wall rather than framing whatever turns up. It also means one supplier is answerable for the result instead of two blaming each other.

Can you do odd or oversized sizes?

Yes. Everything is cut to measure, so a panorama, a tall narrow format or a multi-panel set is ordinary work rather than a special request. The practical limit on very large pieces is weight and handling, which is usually where acrylic glazing replaces glass.

Will the print fade?

Everything printed fades eventually; what decides when you notice is the light the wall actually gets. A sunlit or spotlit wall is far harder on a print than an ordinary one, and UV-filtering glazing slows it rather than stopping it. If the picture matters and the wall is bright, tell us and we will specify for that wall — the detail is on our light fastness page.

Can you frame certificates and awards in quantity?

Yes, and that is usually the sensible way to do it: one specification, one batch, consistent across the set. We also print, foil and emboss certificates in the same place, so a graduation or an awards programme is one job rather than a print order followed by a framing order.

Do you deliver and install?

We deliver across the UAE, and for larger pieces or a set across several walls we can measure and hang. For a single frame, delivery is usually all anyone needs. Tell us which and it is priced accordingly rather than assumed.
